KAC Hazard Assessment Technology

KAC applies advanced numerical models, including TAOS and MIDGARD, developed by Charles C. Watson, founder of the company. TAOS and MIDGARD are fully integrated—using common databases, these models exemplify a true multi-hazard analysis system. TAOS improves on existing approaches to analyzing hydrometeorological hazards and their impacts by modeling at significantly higher resolutions than typical legacy approaches.

  •  TAOS (‘The Arbiter of Storms’) is an integrated storm hazard modeling platform for assessing at high resolution the impacts of hydrometeorological phenomena such as wind, waves, storm surge, rain, and riverine flooding from events such as tropical cyclones (hurricanes), winter storms (Nor'Easters), and slow onset events such as extended rainfalls or droughts.

  • MIDGARD focuses on geophysical hazards associated with seismic events. TAOS and MIDGARD are fully coupled, allowing KAC to simulate tsunamis.

TAOS and MIDGARD can produce outputs in a variety of Geographic Information System (GIS) formats, such as shapefiles, MIF, ESRI raster, GRASS, and international standards such as GRIB. Web-enabled outputs are an option for both real-time data and high-resolution studies.

The techniques employed in TAOS are described in greater detail in papers published in the scientific literature. A list of published TAOS papers is available.
